Theodore P. Kalogris, Ph.D., was a microbiologist who lived by the credo, "Be ashamed to die until you have scored a victory for mankind." Early on he had a passion for science and earned advanced degrees in microbiology; however he had to delay his career to serve his country in World War II. He enlisted in the army where he was wounded. After doctors removed three discs from his lower back he was told he would be confined to a wheelchair for life.
After developing a formula for cattle that improved the bovine mastitis outbreak in South America, Dr. Ted, was inspired to create a nutritional product that would do for humans what his other product had done. Ten years later, and several hundred different formulations, he developed what he believed to be the perfect formulation of nutrition.
Through this complex blend of vitamins, minerals, herbs and other nutrients, Dr. Ted was able to get up and out of his wheelchair and walk with the assistance of a walker. Then to two canes, then finally to one!
He began sharing his product with family and friends, like Sandy and Robert Montgomery.
Robert Montgomery also learned the value of hard work having been raised by a single mother who worked long hard hours. Bob’s original desire was to go to law school, although he took a job selling insurance at a brand new company to make money when he married. There he stayed and was able to earn stock options. At the age of 38, Robert L. Montgomery sold the insurance company he'd co-founded and retired a millionaire. His plan was to spend time raising horses and enjoying his family.
In 1987 Bob was diagnosed with a brain tumor that was believed to have gone undetected for years. While the tumor was successfully removed, his doctors were amazed with his recovery time being half of what was anticipated. Bob knew what it was - it was the fact that he had been taking Dr. Ted's product!
Following that in 1988 Sandy and Robert Montgomery and Dr. Carl Hastings went to meet Dr. Theodore 'Ted' Kalogris where the Montgomerys investigated a way to bring Dr. Kalogris' nutritional supplementation to market. Relìv International, using the direct sales concept of network marketing, was born.
Renowned food scientist Dr. Carl W. Hastings also joined Reliv in 1988 to oversee product research, development, and manufacturing. Dr. Hastings’s scientific laboratories created Reliv’s full range of patented nutritional supplements, functional foods, weight-loss products, and sports drinks.
Today Dr. Hastings is the vice president of research and development and head of the company’s Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Hastings holds B.S. and M.S. degrees and a Ph.D. degree in Food Science from the University of Illinois. He also has decades of experience as a food scientist in food product research and development.
For Mead Johnson & Company, Dr. Hastings conducted key research on sterilized liquid nutritional food products for adults and infants, and developed low-calorie foods marketed under the Weight Watchers label.
